I remember when I was governor, we started to do something on the riverfront to actually transform an abandoned industrial wasteland on the Christina Riverfront into something that’s really beautiful and magical today where thousands of people live and, and work. Verino was president at the creation and turned out to be a great partner. That is the type of individual Verino is, he knows that there’s something that needs to be done and he does it . Verino’s word was his bond and it still is today. Uh, his son Greg emulates that as well. I mean, some people have said that Reno is, you know, he, he, he has the Midas touch.
I mean, everything he touches, um, seems to work out. You know, nobody sees the projects that didn’t work out. Nobody sees the, the ones that they were complete failures. Um, it’s easy to look back in hindsight. Uh, I don’t think the company could have been successful as it is today if it wasn’t for his, his entrepreneurial spirit and his tenacity not to let things go.
He is, uh, he is a stickler for never saying no. Um, he believes in his heart that he can convince people not, not to do exactly what he wants, but he can convince people that what he wants to do is the right thing to do. And, and most of the time he’s right. Since I’ve been here nearly 25 years, there’s some magic here.
Um, Verino is a very, very big part of that. Um, what I’ve learned from him is immeasurable. I watched him practice the things that I learned in school, yet he never had the formal education in it. He’s just that sharp. He’s so observant and picks up on things that most people don’t. He’s self-educated.
Well, I love Verino. Love Midge, and, uh, treasure those days of transforming, uh, the, uh, really ugly riverfront that nobody could even get to, can even get to the river, to what it is today. I’d like to say congratulations to my father. I think it’s an honor to be, uh, to be recognized for what you have done to the state of Delaware for which you have created for your family.
This, this building, these people, it’s all an extension of Verino. Verino and Midge. First of all, congratulations on all your achievements. I wish you good health, happiness, and most importantly, as the Italians would say, I wish you long life, chin don.
